Laser Lines brings 3D printing to life with donation to local school

Staff and pupils at Hanwell Fields Community School will be experiencing their curriculum in a new dimension this term after Laser Lines gifted it a 3D printer.

The primary school will be putting its new 3D printer to good use, bringing lesson topics to life and giving children a chance to understand and apply new technology in their learning. The printer will also provide new and exciting ways to practice their essential mathematics, problem-solving and modelling skills.

The school was chosen due to its links with Laser Lines’ Banbury base, from where it has been key UK supplier of 3D printing systems for over 20 years.

Harry Paget-Wall Collins, Headteacher at Hanwell Fields Community School, said: “This is a real opportunity for our pupils to design items, use their maths and science knowledge in new ways and see their imagination come to life through prototyping models. I want to thank Laser Lines for this kind donation and we look forward to sharing with them all the exciting new work that our pupils are now able to create.”

Makerbot Magic

Makerbot child lookingDan Curtis from the Design Engineering Group at Laser Lines, said: “The Makerbot model we gave to Hanwell Fields Community School is the perfect way to introduce children to the concepts of 3D printing. It is easy to use and can produce a vast array of parts quickly and cheaply. There is a large community of people online to help you get started.

“We know that there is a 20,000 annual shortfall of engineering graduates in this country, and experts are mostly agreed that the problem begins in the early years. 3D printing is a great way to get children interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects early in their lives. Hopefully some of the students in this class will go on to become product engineers of the future.”
